A new alloy with aluminum

A new aluminum-based alloy for space satellites has been developed

According to RUSAL, which is in charge of the development, the thermal expansion coefficient of the new material is more than 1.5 times lower than that of conventional aluminum alloys and almost corresponds to the thermal expansion coefficient of steels and nickel alloys.

The new alloy is extremely relevant for the development of satellite and electronics elements operating in extreme conditions with strong temperature changes.

Until now, parts from such materials have been manufactured only mechanically due to extremely low plasticity indices. By optimizing the alloy composition, ILMIT scientists were able to adapt the material for 3D printing. This made it possible to obtain a virtually identical shape from the finished digital 3D model, thereby reducing costs and production time.
